Course Details

This CPD course is designed to help educators understand what harmful sexual behaviour is and how they can support and protect those affected by it.

This training opportunity is for anyone who works in an education environment, including teachers, teaching assistants, pastoral support and/or youth workers, SENCOs and residential childcare staff.

As the CPD course progresses, educators will gain a broad insight into the potential causes of harmful sexual behaviours, and the consequences it can have on children and young people, alongside the knowledge and skills required to provide effective intervention.

Participants will learn that harmful sexual behaviour involves one or more children engaging in sexual discussions (or acts) that are inappropriate for their age or stage of development. They will be introduced to what behaviour is thought to be appropriate and/or inappropriate, ranging from what is healthy and a part of a child’s natural development to what is problematic, potentially abusive, and harmful.

Whether your aim is to equip yourself with a general understanding of how to spot sexualised behaviours or you work with children and young people who might be affected, this CPD course will equip you with the knowledge, tools, and wider appreciation of HSB and relevant legislation so you can make an appropriate response.

Course Aims

This CPD resource aims to provide an up-to-date overview of what is regarded as harmful sexual behaviour in children and young people and how educators can identify it, respond, and protect those affected.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Define what is meant by harmful sexual behaviour in children and provide statistics on its widespread occurrence.
  • Explore potential causes for such behaviour, including biological factors,  environmental influences, family dynamics and individual experiences.
  • Examine the various physical, psychological, social and legal consequences that can result from such behaviours.
  • Understand the differences between normal sexualised and more concerning behaviours.
  • Identify appropriate prevention and intervention strategies that can be employed to support children who display or are exposed to harmful sexual behaviours.
  • Evaluate best practices for responding appropriately to cases of harmful sexual behaviour in children and adolescents, working with professionals and in family contexts.
  • Know how to best support children and young people affected by behaviours with an emphasis on prevention and protection.
