Course Details

This CPD course is perfect for anyone who works with, or alongside, children or a young person in an education setting, that suffers from a visual impairment. That includes teachers, teaching assistants, pastoral support workers and/or SENCOs.

Supporting children with any form of visual disability is hugely important in a school setting. This free training will equip educators with the necessary knowledge and skills to support children in their care, so they can better understand the causes of visual impairment. In addition, participants will be able to describe the impact of not being able to see clearly on classroom behaviours and educational development.

Part of this CPD course is designed to instil the importance of growing awareness and understanding among educators, school staff, peers, and classmates, of the difficulties of having a visual impairment, so that a supportive community can be built around those that are struggling with their vision.

Whether you aim to equip yourself with a general understanding of visual impairment in the classroom or have a direct connection with a child or young person that has a sight issue, this course will equip educators with the knowledge required to best support all those that need special assistance.

Course Aims

This online training aims to provide an understanding of visual impairment and its impact on child development, learning, and social inclusion. It will also provide strategies for supporting these children so they can achieve their true potential.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Accurately assess the prevalence rates of visual impairment in children, as well as identify common causes and types to improve knowledge and to understand the complexities of support and the issues presented by it
  • Describe in detail the impact that visual impairment can have on a developing child’s physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development
  • Identify common myths and misconceptions about visual impairment and how these beliefs can impact an individual
  • Explain the legal framework in place for supporting children with visual impairments and know how and when to apply it
  • Develop a whole school approach to identifying support needs for students with visual impairment so that a supportive community can be built around them
  • Create effective classroom strategies which promote the independence, mobility, and integration of visually impaired students into mainstream classes.
