Course Details

Fire safety is vital in any environment, but especially so in education settings where large groups gather daily. This first module in our fire safety training series is tailored for teachers, teaching assistants, SENCOs, pastoral staff, and residential or youth childcare workers—whether they hold specific fire safety responsibilities or simply wish to enhance their knowledge.

Participants will explore the importance of fire safety regulations, understand how fires can ignite and spread rapidly, and learn about key risks within education environments. The course offers practical insights into fire behaviour, including how it produces toxic gases and spreads swiftly, endangering lives.

Through this online training, education professionals will gain essential knowledge, practical skills, and a clearer understanding of the legal requirements for fire safety in educational settings.

Collaboration and Teamwork Skills   Problem-solving and Critical Thinking Skills   Leadership and Management Skills

Course Aims

This course aims to equip education professionals with a solid understanding of fire safety principles, relevant legislation, and personal responsibilities. By the end of the training, participants will be able to identify fire risks in educational settings, understand how fires start and spread, and apply practical strategies to reduce hazards and promote a culture of fire safety awareness among colleagues and students.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of fire safety awareness and be able to advise others
  • Identify relevant fire legislation and know what their specific responsibilities (and those of other appointed officers) are
  • Describe the behaviour of fire, how fire spreads and how to stop it. Participants will learn how heat, fuel and oxygen can both ignite and extinguish a fire
  • Explain the common causes of fire in education settings, i.e.: arson, burning of chemical substances in laboratories, cigarettes, etc
  • Describe how fire risks can be reduced by things like regularly checking equipment and removing anything that is found to be faulty
  • Understand the necessity for having fire safety regulations in education, and that this is essential for all staff, as it will help decrease the chance of a fire occurring.
