Course Details

Supporting Looked After Children in the Classroom is an online CPD course designed for teachers, teaching assistants, pastoral support workers, SENCOs and educational professionals who work with children or young people currently in the care system.

Designed to equip education professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills to best support these children, this online course will ensure that educators have a better understanding of the experiences and backgrounds of ‘looked after’ children. The course particularly encourages staff to be more sensitive and aware of the potential impact of being in care on an individual’s academic performance.

Educators will be particularly introduced to what is involved with ‘Personal Education Plans’ and how this affects their responsibilities. During the course, educators will also learn of the importance of maintaining social and emotional support, along with effective lines of communication.

Whether you aim to equip yourself with a general understanding of supporting ‘looked after’ children in the classroom, or have a direct connection with someone in care, or are a designated teacher, this CPD training will equip you with all the tools that you need to make the most effective response.

Course Aims

This CPD training aims to equip educators with a detailed understanding of the unique needs and challenges faced by children in care, with a specific emphasis on how the impact of being placed in care can impact academic attainment.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Better understand the possible experiences that lead to children being placed in care so they can better see through their eyes.
  • Understand the impact being in care can have on academic attainment, classroom behaviours and general mood.
  • Be aware of the important role an educational setting has in supporting ‘looked after’ children.
  • Recognise what is involved with Personal Education Plans (PEPs), including the regular need for review.
  • Describe the role and key duties of the designated teacher.
